3 Days in Acapulco for First Timers

Organisiert von Jenna Scatena, who's been a dedicated Acapulco visitor for more than a decade.

Known as the “Pearl of the Pacific,” Acapulco was once the place to go in Mexico for the rich and famous. While it might have been upstaged more recently by Cancun and Los Cabos, Acapulco still has a shine to its resort-lined bay.

You’ll discover that the party scene is alive and well, and the endless options of watersports, beaches, and restaurants make it a well-rounded coastal destination. Given its vibrant old town and soaring sea cliffs, Acapulco is never low on things to do. If you just want to get a taste of the city's old glamour, this is how I recommend you plan your time.

Editor's note: Travel to Guerrero is not recommended due to serious safety risks in this area. Please follow your government's guidance and travel advisories.

It's hot here year-round. Don't forget to seek shade and slather on the sunscreen.

If you only have time for one thing, make it the cliff divers of La Quebrada.

Day 1

Immerse yourself in local culture on a private guided Acapulco tour. Going off the beaten path, you'll explore a popsicle factory, pinata workshop, mercados, and cathedral. A provided lunch lets you taste Mexican food and savor local flavors.

In the afternoon, walk the city. See the Centro Cultural La Casa de los Vientos mural and Chapel of Peace, perched high over the bay for expansive views.

Finally, enjoy a 3-course dinner from La Perla restaurant while you watch cliff divers jump from La Quebrada. Stop at the nearby, legendary Los Flamingos Hotel for a nightcap.

Day 2

On day two, rise before the sun to kayak through Tres Palos Lagoon at daybreak. A tour takes you on a 1.9-mile (3-kilometer) route that includes a morning meditation, and you can spot native birds as you watch the sunrise over the water.

Next, experience the ancient practice of temazcal (sweat lodge) purification. The honey, aloe, fresh teas, and heat used are said to cleanse you of any negative energy. Or, escape the city bustle on a horseback beach ride. You'll see where baby turtles hatch and get to breathe in fresh air atop a horse.

Day 3

On your last day, visit Taxco. The so-called "Silver Town" is the site of a newly discovered pre-Hispanic mine. Mexican baroque architectural styles and cobbled streets dating back more than 500 years are part of the cityscape, nestled in the north Sierra Madre Mountains. Shop for quality pieces of jewelry, craft items, souvenirs, and keepsakes, and sample local food.

On your return, spend a night of novelty. See a wrestling show accompanied by beer, tacos, and churros while locals shout on their favorite luchadores for a different impression of the city.
