The basics
Since both sites are located north of Aswan, Kom Ombo Temple is often combined with the Temple of Horus at Edfu, another riverside masterpiece. Kom Ombo Temple is also a popular stop on Nile River cruises, which dock a short walk away from the archaeological site. In addition to visiting Kom Ombo Temple itself, it’s worth setting aside some time to explore the onsite Crocodile Museum.
Things to know before you go
- Great for history lovers; don’t miss the unique carvings of early medical instruments.
- A lack of printed information on-site means visiting with a guide is especially worthwhile.
- Steps and gravel pathways can make this site difficult to access for visitors with wheelchairs or strollers.
How to get there
The Temple of Kom Ombo is located in Kom Ombo, a town that’s 29 miles (47 kilometers) north of Aswan. Many tours of Kom Ombo Temple include round-trip transport from Aswan, but it’s also possible to travel there by taxi or train. The Aswan to Luxor train stops in Kom Ombo, and the train station is a 10-minute car ride from the temple site.

When to get there
With little shade, Kom Ombo Temple can be hot and sunny during the middle of the day, so visit early or late to avoid the most intense heat. Cruise boats often stop by Kom Ombo Temple at sunset, which means the site can be crowded; other visitors aside, it’s a beautiful time to arrive with light that’s ideal for photography.
Visiting the Crocodile Museum at Kom Ombo Temple
Tickets to the Crocodile Museum are included with admission to Kom Ombo Temple. Inside the small museum, you’ll find the fascinating remains of mummified crocodiles that were found near the temple site, along with preserved eggs and other artifacts. Horus, one of the gods of Kom Ombo, was known as the god of crocodiles.
