Furnas

Furnas, São Miguel, Portugal

The basics

The area is characterized by white-washed houses and cobbled streets that are punctuated by steaming hot springs. Highlights include Parque Terra Nostra—an 18th-century botanical garden with thermal paths—and Caldeiras das Furnas, a collection of hot springs with particularly high geothermal activity.

Furnas is a staple of tours that explore the eastern side of São Miguel. Most excursions depart from the island capital of Ponta Delgada and include round-trip transport, relieving the hassle of car hire and navigation. Itineraries usually include Furnas’ crater lake, free time at the hot springs, and a cozido-style lunch. To up the energy level, opt for a tour that includes kayaking or biking around Furnas; if you want to ensure a romantic experience, book an evening tour to soak in the springs beneath the stars.

Things to know before you go

  • Admission fees vary for each hot spring complex. If you’re on a budget, Poca da Dona Beija is the best choice.
  • There are several guesthouses, hotels, and restaurants in Furnas. Due to the town’s small size, advance booking during peak season is essential.
  • The cobblestone streets and uneven terrain in Furnas may make certain sites difficult to access on your own with a wheelchair or stroller; however, some guided tours are wheelchair and stroller accessible.
