The basics

All four of Banff’s Via Ferrata routes depart from the Cliffhouse Bistro (an excellent spot for a post-climb treat). Climbing options range from two hours to a full day and distances from .6 miles (1 kilometer) to 2 miles (3.2 kilometers). Regardless of which is right for you, each route offers views that are nothing short of spectacular.

The Via Ferrata is technically located within Mt. Norquay Ski Resort, one of three ski areas inside Banff National Park. At the apex of your steel-clad adventure, you’ll be some 3,280 feet (1,000 meters) above the park landscapes below. “Rocky Mountain High,” you might say.

Things to know before you go

  • Though it likely goes without saying, the Via Ferrata is only open during summer.

  • The activity is safe. Your harness is always attached to the mountain’s steel cable pathway, securing you to the rock at all times.

  • Backpacks, hiking boots, gloves, sunscreen, rain jackets, and pants are all free to rent on-mountain, though you may want to bring your own.

  • You must have a Banff National Park Pass to access the Mt. Norquay Ski Resort (which lies within the park).

  • Though no prior climbing experience is required, this activity is limited to those 12 and up.

How to get there

Many visitors will fly into Calgary International Airport and rent a car for the hour-long drive to Banff National Park. Taking the Trans-Canada Highway, you’ll hit the national park (paying the entrance fee or showing your pass), exit for Mount Norquay Road, and follow the signs to the ski area. Alternatively, you can take a shuttle bus or taxi from Calgary or Banff directly to Mt. Norquay.

When to get there

The Via Ferrata is only open during the summer, from June 10–Sept. 10. The shorter routes run thrice a day; the longer routes run twice daily. Be sure to arrive about 30 minutes before your booked experience to park, get geared up, and get ready to climb.

Test your mettle

While specific routes are essentially climbing the world’s tallest ladder and crossing swinging bridges, others will test your fear of heights. On the Skyline and Summiteer routes, you’ll cross “bridges” that are essentially two cables—one in your hands and one below your feet. How’s your balance? How’s your vertigo?
