3 Days in Berlin for First Timers

Organisiert von Katie Nadwornywho always manages to return to Berlin.

I learn something new every time I visit Berlin. It’s a city I’ve visited in all seasons and for all different reasons, including for the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Each visit reveals a new side of Berlin. History always seems so present in the city that brings the past into today in a visceral way.

It's easy to spend hours getting lost in Berlin’s world-class museums, or by eating your way through the melting pot of international cuisines. In such a significant city, it can be hard to know where to begin. Here’s what I suggest.

Berlin is cool and gray for much of the year, with bright, sunny summers.

If you only have time for one thing, make it the remains of the Berlin Wall, a key to Berlin’s recent history.

Day 1

Berlin was a divided city until 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell. to understand the scars that remain from Berlin’s most famous monument, begin at the Brandenburg Gate and trace the remains and memorials of the wall.

In the afternoon, visit the Reichstag and explore the Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe and the Mitte district. You’ll have a deeper understanding of Berlin’s history, as well as of the geography of central Berlin.

Day 2

On your second day in Berlin, head to Museum Island, where a cluster of museums contain a wide range of art and artifacts. The five museums on the island include the Neues Museum, which contains the famous bust of Nefertiti.

Afterwards, visit Berlin’s old Jewish district and learn about the Jewish history of the city, from the remains of its synagogues to its memorials and museums. Make sure to stop by the Neue Synagogue.

Day 3

Spend your third day in Kreuzberg, one of Berlin’s hippest neighborhoods. Here, you can visit the East Side Gallery, an open-air exhibition on some of the remaining sections of the Berlin Wall, along with cool contemporary art spots.

In the evening, get a taste of Berlin’s famous nightlife on a journey through the pubs and clubs that buzz with energy at all hours. Explore East Berlin’s after-hours scene and see how this vibrant city lives at night.
