The basics

Though rocky and rugged, Pohoiki Beach is still popular—which makes sense, as it’s excellent for challenging surfing and snorkeling and always reliable for spectacular views. Expect crowds on weekends especially; if you’re here to commune with Pele's spirit, opt for a weekday visit.

You’ll find a boat ramp, picnic tables, rustic restrooms, and a simple parking situation along with scores of black sand and walloping waves. There are also small, natural hot springs you can soak in if they’re not entertaining others.

Things to know before you go

  • Volcanic rock is notoriously tough and craggy. Bring close-toed shoes if you’re getting on the “sand” at all.
  • If you’re getting in the water, be prepared for strong currents and rough waves at any time of year.
  • Bring your own drinking water—the park currently doesn’t supply it.
  • Without new “sand” being created, this beach may wash away in just a few years. Come while you can.

How to get there

Most visitors to Pohoiki will arrive by car. From Pahoa, simply follow Highway 130 until its terminus. Turn left onto Highway 137, which ends right at Pohoiki. It’s a beautiful route—stop at Kaimu Beach Park and Mackenzie State Recreation Area (both on the way) if you have time.

When to get there

The park is open every day from 9am to 6pm. Come on weekdays around opening or closing time to avoid the crowds (and to up your odds of finding parking). And though June to October can sometimes have gentler waters, don’t count on it. Come ready for choppy currents whenever you visit.

Some like it hot

Believe it or not, the 2018 lava flow stopped roughly 230 feet (70 meters) from the Pohoiki Harbor. Here, you can see exactly where it stopped—certain things, like picnic tables, are totally annihilated, others half-gone, and others untouched by mere inches. It’s a spectacular place to witness the undeniable power of Mother Earth…and the power of chance.
