Rue Saint-James, Bordeaux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, 33000

The basics

The Grosse Cloche is a former medieval entrance to the city of Bordeaux, and a vestige of the defensive ramparts which once encircled the city. Instantly recognizable for its turrets, ornate clock, and 8.5-ton (7.7-tonne) bell, the belfry used to be a part of the city’s old town hall. Today, the bell rings on rare occasions, typically for select public holidays and remembrances, though it also tolls at noon on the first Sunday of every month.

Given its location in Bordeaux’s historic center, the Grosse Cloche is easy to admire on walking, bike, or sidecar tours. The belfry is also open to visitors on select dates from April to September.
