16 Rue Saint-Étienne, Bordeaux, France

The basics

Saint-Seurin Basilica is renowned as one of Bordeaux’s most striking architectural landmarks, built in the Romanesque style with prominent Gothic elements added over the centuries. Highlights include the striking altarpiece with its 14 alabaster bas-reliefs; 11th-century crypt, which contains the tomb of Saint-Fort; marble Merovingian sarcophagus; and vast Christian necropolis with tombs dating from as early as the fourth century.

Visit on a history or architecture tour of Bordeaux to learn more of the basilica’s story. Rumor has it that the gallant followers of Charlemagne, King of the Franks (and father of the almighty Carolingian empire, which stretched from Spain to Hungary), were buried in here and that Charlemagne placed Roland’s olifant on the altar as he passed by on his way back from Spain.
