Bom Jesus do Monte
The Basics
Built in 1784, the Bom Jesus do Monte is reached via its 577-step granite staircase boasting 17 landings adorned with fountains and statues. On arrival at the church, absorb the sweeping views before entering to view the interior and altarpiece depicting Jesus’ crucifixion. If you’re not able to climb the stairs, you can ride a 19th-century funicular up and down the hillside.
Nearly all guided tours of Braga include a visit to the Bom Jesus do Monte. The sanctuary also features on day trips from Porto, including those that visit Braga and the nearby historical town of Guimarães. Other Porto tours stop at the sanctuary while showcasing the region’s food and wine offerings, or the beauty and waterfalls of Peneda-Geres National Park nearby.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Bom Jesus do Monte is an essential stop for Christian pilgrims, and architecture and history aficionados.
Entry to the sanctuary is free. Funicular rides require a small fee.
While wheelchair-users cannot use the stairs, they can reach the church via roads that loop behind it.
How to Get There
There are several ways to reach the Bom Jesus do Monte. Catch the #2 bus from Braga’s Praca Conde de Agrolongo to the foot of the stairs, or drive and park at paid lots at the base of the stairway or the hilltop above it. You can then walk to the church terrace, take the famous staircase, or catch the funicular.
When to Get There
Bom Jesus do Monte is open daily, from early until late. Crowds can build up, especially in high season, so plan to visit outside busy late mornings and mid-afternoons. During summer, the church gardens are often alive with bandstand concerts and open-air exhibitions.
Making the Most of the Bom Jesus do Monte
To make the most of the Bom Jesus do Monte without having to climb the stairs, ascend by funicular: riding the charming, water-powered tramway is an experience in itself. At the summit, admire the church’s interior and stroll the surrounding manicured gardens before descending the stairs. That way, you can admire each elaborate landing while soaking in the fabulous views all the way down.
