La Caleta Beach

The basics

La Caleta is the ideal place for fun in the sun after a Cadiz walking or bike tour, or to break up a day trip from Seville and Malaga. From here, you can spy the crescent-shaped Balneario de Nuestra Señora de la Palma y del Real, a 1920s-era spa with gazebo-tipped arms that reach out towards the water. It’s not the only impressive structure here, either, as the beach is bookended to the north and south by two fortresses, San Sebastian and Santa Catalina.

Things to know before you go

  • La Caleta is a free public beach, so you can bring your own sun umbrellas, towels, and other gear or rent an umbrella and lounger at one of the beach clubs along the water.

  • The clean sand and shallow water are ideal for bathers of all ages, particularly families with young children.

  • Lifeguards are on patrol here.

  • There are free restrooms and public showers to freshen up after a dip.

  • The waterfront is lined with beach bars and restaurants for snacks, drinks, and meals.

  • There is a paved stretch lining the beach to the fortresses but no boardwalk for accessing the water with a wheelchair.

How to get there

La Caleta lines central Cadiz to the west and is easy to reach on foot from most of the town’s sights. There are direct trains to Cadiz from Seville that take less than two hours or trains from Malaga with a connection along the route; the beach is about a 30-minute walk from the station.

When to get there

La Caleta is buzzy from spring through fall. The sun can be daunting in the summer, especially at midday, so do as the locals do and bask in the early morning and later afternoon but retreat indoors during the hottest hours of the day. Perhaps the biggest perk of all is that the beach faces west, making it the perfect spot in town to catch a dreamy Spanish sunset.

The best beaches near Cadiz

Easy access to La Caleta means that this urban beach can often be quite crowded. But don’t despair: There are plenty of other nearby options for basking and bathing along the coast. Top nearby beaches include laid-back Los Caños de Meca, sporty Bolonia, and trendy El Palmar, known for its great nightlife. Keep in mind that though some of Cadiz’s outlying beaches are connected to the town by bus, many can only be reached by car.
