Adventurers flock to the Arkansas River from across the western US to navigate its rapids, which range from relatively tame Class II all the way to expert-level Class V. The mild Browns Canyon and Bighorn Sheep Canyon are popular choices for families with children, while the churning rapids of stretches like Pine Creek and the Numbers and Narrows appeal to more experienced rafters looking for thrills. The rapids are best tackled on a half- or full-day guided tour, which usually includes transport, all equipment, and a master river guide.
For travelers who prefer a tamer approach, the river is also a popular fly-fishing spot.
In Colorado, Buena Vista is the closest town to many of the most popular sections of the Arkansas River. Some tours also depart from Cañon City and Salida, where you can get oriented at the visitors center for the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area.
Rafting tours generally run between May and September. Water levels depend on seasonal snowpack and runoff, but levels are generally highest in June, while July and August offer lower levels more suited for families.
