An included stop on some literary tours of Dublin, the Dublin Writers Museum hosts readings, exhibitions, and other writing-themed events. That’s on top of the regular exhibits, which cover 300 years of Irish writing in chronological order; the exhibits only feature deceased writers, so don’t look for new names here. Available in six languages, the audio guide weaves the authors’ lives into the exhibits, which include early editions of some of Ireland’s most beloved books.
The Dublin Writers Museum is located at 18 Parnell Square in Dublin’s Broadstone neighborhood. It's a 15-minute walk from the Parnell Luas light rail stop, with service from the Green Line. Buses, including the #46e, 180, 932, and 933 lines, drop passengers at the Rotunda, and Hugh Lane Gallery Bus Station, which is just a few steps away from the museum.
Open daily, the Dublin Writers Museum is rarely crowded. If you’re coming from a different part of Dublin, it’s worth budgeting some time to visit nearby attractions, as well. In addition to the book shop, café, and Irish Writers Centre, the museum is close to the excellent—and free—Hugh Lane Gallery of contemporary art.
The Dublin Writers Museum isn’t the only literary landmark museum in the city. Next, head to the National Print Museum, which is devoted to the ink, paper, and presses that are the building blocks of great books. Another favorite is the James Joyce Cultural Centre, which is devoted to the author’s life and work.
