The basics

Kelham Hall offers a variety of different activities to visitors, and is a popular family day out. Prebook tickets for historian-led tours of the stately home, which focus on history and design. Or join a tour of the landscaped gardens and parkland (summer only), where you’ll find play areas, woodland walks, and river fishing. The grounds also feature an outdoor maze (summer only), constructed from maize.

The ground floor of Kelham Hall hosts immersive escape rooms capable of hosting between two and six players per game. Kelham Hall also offers various accommodations, including camping and self-catering options.

Things to know before you go

  • Much of Kelham Hall and the immediate surrounding area is wheelchair-accessible, though some parts of the grounds—such as the riverside meadow—are not.
  • Food is served at a small on-site café, and at a pub across the road from the estate.
  • The escape rooms at Kelham are geared toward visitors age 12 and older.

How to get there

Kelham Hall is in Nottinghamshire, northwest of Newark-on-Trent. Driving from Nottingham takes about 40 minutes. East Midlands Railway operate trains between Nottingham and Newark Castle, which is just a 5-minute taxi ride away. Alternatively, take the No. 28 bus from the station to Kelham.

When to get there

The grounds are open daily as is the hall, though it may close to the public when events are being held so it’s worth ringing ahead. Visit in summer to make the most of the surrounding parkland, where you’ll find children’s play areas, tennis courts, and walking trails.

Walking at Kelham Hall

The parklands surrounding Kelham are perfect for countryside strolls. For a gentle amble, follow the Woodland and Riverside Walk, which leads by key sights on the estate such as the monks’ graveyard and the riverside meadow, and take about 45 minutes to complete. For a longer hike, set off on the 3-hour Kelham Hills Walk, which offers views of the surrounding hills, woodland, and farms.
