The basics
Although tourism has made its mark on many of Fuerteventura’s beaches and fishing towns, there are a few that have yet to fully feel its effects—El Cotillo is one of them. Trade winds here make for excellent watersports conditions, and visitors can take lessons in surfing, kite surfing, and windsurfing from the beaches of El Cotillo. While it’s worth spending a couple days basking in the relaxed atmosphere, many visitors come to town on an excursion from other parts of the island. Adventurous types can visit the beach as part of an off-road jeep safari or electric bike tour.
Things to know before you go
- Remember to pack a bathing suit, beach towel, and sun protection.
- Don’t expect many amenities at the beaches here; be sure to bring your own food and plenty of water.
- There are a couple of ATMs in town but most businesses accept major credit cards.
How to get there
El Cotillo is 45 minutes from the Fuerteventura airport, and the best way to get there is by rental car. It’s also possible to reach the town via a bus line that runs from Puerto del Rosalio to Correlejo, Caleta de Fuste, Morro del Jable, and Cotillo.

El Cotillo Beach Guide
There’s a beach for every type in El Cotillo. Families can park themselves in the sand to the north along La Concha, which is protected on both sides, ensuring calm waters. Those in search of both wind and waves will want to travel south to the long stretch of beach situated just beyond town. In general, beaches become more “clothing optional” as you move away from town.
