The basics

Although the house is the full-time residence of the lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia, it’s open to the public for tours during certain times of year—and for specific public events. Available on a first-come, first-served basis, the guided tours depart every 30 minutes and cover the Main Foyer, Grand Staircase, Ballroom, Morning Room, Drawing Room, and Dining Room. They also give you the inside scoop on the house’s history.

How to get there

In downtown Halifax, the house is within walking distance of most downtown accommodation. You’ll find the manor across the street from The Old Burying Ground–a peaceful historic cemetery perfect for a stroll. The house itself is on the corner of Barrington Street and Bishop Street.

When to get there

Typically, tours of Government House are offered from Friday to Monday in September, from morning to midday. As the tours are free and operate on a first-come, first-served basis, it’s best to try to arrive early to ensure you make it in. Time for tea

Government House hosts an annual garden party at the end of June, and invites the public to explore the grounds of the historic house while mingling with the lieutenant governor. The manor hosts other events throughout the year, such as evening talks with Nova Scotian musicians, scientists, athletes, and authors.
