The basics

The Alaska State Library Archives and Museum (SLAM) collection comprises some 32,000 cataloged objects, including 15,000 pieces in the Alaska Native collection alone. Travelers will find native Alaskan art, as well as natural history collections of gemstones, mounted plants, and fossils all on the first floor, while massive floor-to-ceiling windows enclose the library upstairs. The atrium is especially popular, as it houses a life-sized eagle tree replica, complete with a nest, common in some parts of the state.

Sheldon Jackson Museum

Travelers to Alaska who plan to spend time in Sitka should set aside an hour or two to visit the Sheldon Jackson Museum, SLAM’s sister attraction. This collection highlights objects from each of Alaska’s Native groups, including rescued totem poles from the 19th century and a helmet worn by a Tlingit warrior.
