The basics

Tackling the mighty peak is a manageable challenge for hikers with a reasonable fitness level and can be completed in a day. The most popular route sets out from Seathwaite and follows the scenic Corridor Route from Sty Head to Lingmell Col, before climbing to the summit of Scafell Pike. Avoid getting lost on a hiking tour to the top or admire the mountain from afar during a ride on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

Things to know before you go

  • Scafell Pike is a must-climb mountain for travelers of a good fitness level and with plenty of climbing experience. 
  • There are three main routes to the peak of Scafell Pike, all of which require the ability to map read and use a compass. 
  • Sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing, and plenty of water and snacks are necessary to summit the peak. 
  • At the summit of Scafell Pike, you’ll find a plaque that’s designated as England’s highest war memorial.

How to get there

A round-trip hike of Scafell Pike takes around seven hours. For the best chance of dry and sunny skies, climb during spring or summer. Be aware that during the winter months of November and December, darkness falls at around 4pm, meaning that you’ll need to begin your climb much earlier.

When to get there

The closest rail stations to the peak are Penrith and Oxenholme, both of which have connections to London, Manchester, and Glasgow. From the aforementioned stations, however, it’s recommended to book a taxi in order to reach your accommodation.

Three Peaks Challenge

As England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike plays an integral role in the Three Peaks Challenge, which sees keen climbers tackle Snowden, Scafell Pike, and Ben Nevis—the highest peaks in England, Scotland, and Wales—in either 24 hours or three days. With a combined height of more than 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) this challenge is not for the faint of heart.
