The basics

Dotted with more than 30 islands and islets, the calm and clear waters of the lake are ideal for boating, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and fishing, while hiking, biking, camping, golf, and shopping are popular activities along the shore. In the winter, you can go ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. The towns of Holderness, Sandwich, Ashland, Center Harbor, and Moultonborough border Squam Lake and offer lodging and other tourist amenities.

The lake is a nesting site for bald eagles, loons, and great blue herons, and is also home to a wide variety of fish including perch, trout, salmon, and bass. There are also several nature preserves in the region.

Things to know before you go

  • It’s a good idea to bring binoculars to go wildlife spotting; some guided tours will provide them.
  • Dress appropriately for the weather and activity.
  • Most of the islands on the lake are privately owned, but It’s possible to camp on Moon Island and Bowman Island with advance reservation.
  • The region offers tax-free shopping.

How to get there

Squam Lake is located around 30 minutes south of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Access via routes 23, 109, or 113. Holderness offers boat access to the lake.

When to get there

Summer is the most popular time to visit Squam Lake. Weekends can be particularly busy and visitors should make bookings in advance if planning to visit during a summer weekend or holiday. Boat tours only run during the summer.

Squam Lakes Natural Science Center

Located in Holderness, the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center showcases the nature and wildlife of New Hampshire. Learn about native animals such as mountain lions, bobcats, river otters, and white-tailed deer, through live animal exhibits and natural science education programs. The center also offers self-guided nature trails, a children’s activity center, and guided lake cruises.
