The basics

One of the major residents of West Philadelphia’s University City neighborhood (alongside the University of Pennsylvania, part of the Ivy League), Drexel University is a leading private university with a large student population and a famous cooperative educational program. Its vibrant campus is abuzz with student life throughout the academic year, and it’s worth soaking up the energy on a stroll through campus—don’t miss the chance to explore the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery in the URBN Annex, which showcases a range of multimedia exhibitions.

The university also operates the Academy of Natural Sciences on Center City’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway, a joint museum and research facility that displays artifacts like dinosaur fossils and dioramas featuring taxidermied animals.

What to do in University City

Though University City is one of Philadelphia’s most scholarly enclaves, you don’t need to be a student to appreciate what it has to offer. After exploring Drexel, continue to the neighboring University of Pennsylvania to visit the Penn Museum and Institute of Contemporary Art. Then, stop for a bite at a neighborhood favorite like the beloved White Dog Cafe or Han Dynasty.
