The basics

The SS Rotterdam was built in Rotterdam, inaugurated in 1958, and put into service in 1959, making a transatlantic crossing to New York for its maiden voyage. At the time, it was one of the 10 largest cruise ships in the world and was an active ocean liner until 2008, when it returned to Rotterdam and was permanently docked at Katendrecht.

Today, visitors to the SS Rotterdam can visit most areas of the ship, including the bow, bridge, and captain’s cabin, plus the engine rooms, crew areas, and radio room below deck. Explore the above-deck areas at your own pace with an audio tour, or join a guided tour to head below deck to discover the inner workings of the liner—book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment, as these popular ship tours can sell out.

Things to know before you go

  • There are three tour itineraries to choose from: upper-deck areas with an audio guide, below-deck areas with a guided tour, and both with a combined audio guide and guided tour.
  • Kids love exploring this restored cruise liner and receive the “Small Captain’s Passport” with quizzes and games. Young seafarers can also learn Morse code or play shuffleboard while on board.
  • The upper decks offer sweeping city views, so bring your camera along to capture the panorama.
  • The SS Rotterdam is a fully functioning hotel with a restaurant, two bars, an outdoor terrace, and a pool.
  • The restaurant, bars, and terrace are open to the public and can be accessed without an admission ticket; you must book an audio or guided tour to see more of the ship.
  • The ship's public areas are wheelchair accessible, while only a portion of the tour itineraries is accessible.

How to get there

The SS Rotterdam is docked at Katendrecht outside the city center, so it is not walkable from the downtown sights. Instead, take bus 77 or metro D or E to the Rijnhaven stop or a water taxi. A free shuttle service between the ship and the Rijnhaven metro station runs only on weekends.
