Georg Trakl Denkmal (Traklhouse)

Waagplatz 1a, Salzburg, Salzburg, 5020

The basics

Home to Georg Trakl before he left Salzburg to study pharmacy in Vienna, the Georg Trakl Memorial offers a compelling window into the poet—who died at just 27– and his inspirations. See some of the furnishings of his family home, view his letters, explore his emotive state of mind through his melancholic poems, and watch the roughly 45-minute German-language documentary about him.

Explore the museum via in-house guided German-language tours that run every weekday. If you don’t speak German, you can still gain a sense of Trakl’s early years from the museum and documentary, especially if you have researched his life online before visiting.

How to learn more about Georg Trakl’s life and works

One of Europe’s greatest expressionist poets, Georg Trakl’s life is defined by his mournful poems. Exposed to drugs in youth, he witnessed World War I’s horrors while serving as a medical officer and lapsed into a depression that led to his death in 1914. You can trace Trakl’s footsteps in Salzburg by following a trail of plaques engraved with his poems at places such as Mönschberg and the Mirabell Garden.
