Großes Festspielhaus

Hofstallgasse 1, Salzburg, Salzburg, 5020

The basics

The hall was built on a site that once housed royal stables, with great care taken to preserve the structure of the stables’ original facade. The interiors are beautifully adorned with sculptures and paintings, and the floor of the entrance foyer features a contemporary mosaic of horses, a nod to the building's equestrian past. While the best way to experience it all is by attending a musical performance, those unable to make it to a show can still take a tour.

When to get there

The best time to visit the venue is during the Salzburg Festival, which takes place every summer from late July through August. That said, there are plenty of events throughout the year. Public tours are held every afternoon, with twice-daily (morning and afternoon) tours in July and August (except during rehearsals and performances).

The Salzburg Festival

Established in 1920 by poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, theater director Max Reinhardt, and celebrated composer Richard Strauss, this annual festival draws in fans of the performing arts, with 5-plus weeks of operas, plays, and orchestral performances. The programming generally includes a number of classics, including von Hofmannsthal’s Jederman (Everyman), which has been staged here annually since the beginning, except during the Anschluss (annexation) in WWII.
