The basics

Comporta Beach (Praia da Comporta) features over 12 miles (19 kilometers) of white sand dunes and crystal-clear waters that often draw comparisons to the Caribbean. The location boasts certifications for both accessibility and eco-consciousness, with a “Blue Flag” award showcasing its commitment to upholding environmental standards.

The secluded location lends itself well to both relaxing sunbathing and water sports, namely surfing and windsurfing. To get a more expansive sense of the surrounding area, book an all-day tour of the Alentejo coast—a great way to visit not only the beach, but some nearby natural sites and historical villages as well.

How to get there

Comporta Beach is located on the Troia Peninsula—about an hour south of Lisbon. There is no direct public transport between Lisbon and Comporta, so having your own car is essential. The nearest airport is in Lisbon, from where you can hire a car to reach the beach via the A2 Highway. Otherwise, there is also a ferry crossing from Setubal to the Troia Peninsula—it takes just 15 minutes and is a nice alternative.

When to get there

While Lisbon residents escape to Comporta year-round, the best time to visit the beach is from June to September. These months typically have dry weather and temperatures around 80°F (27°C) making it ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. If you prefer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, however, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons—either April to May or October to November.
