For a quick introduction to Sitka’s colorful past. a visit to the Sitka History Museum is a must. Tours of the museum are available on request and rotating exhibits feature local artists and photographers. Kids will enjoy the model of 1867 Sitka, an exact replica of how the town looked when Alaska was transferred to the United States. There’s also a gift shop where you can find an extensive selection of Alaska history books as well as Native handicrafts and local art.

The Sitka History Museum is located along the Sitka waterfront at 330 Harbor Drive, adjacent to the Sitka Centennial Visitors Center. The museum is a short walk from St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Baranof Castle Historic Site. Ample parking is available in front of the museum.
The museum is open Monday through Friday from 8am through 4pm and select weekends during the summer months. The museum has limited hours during the winter months so it’s best to call ahead for current hours if you’re visiting outside the main tourist season.
