The basics

Georgetown University has four distinct campuses in DC: the Main Campus, the Medical Center, the Law Center, and the School of Continuing Studies. The Main Campus is home to many historic buildings, including the flagship Healy Hall, a National Historic Landmark. Visitors can explore the university on a self-guided tour or on a guided information session and campus tour. It’s also possible to sit in on a class or meet one-on-one with a student or faculty member.

A number of guided walking tours include a stop at Georgetown University, along with other attractions in the area, such as the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal. Opt to visit on a hop-on hop-off bus tour to explore Washington DC at your leisure.

Things to know before you go

  • Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as there’s a lot of ground to cover.
  • Much of the university is wheelchair accessible. Accessible route maps and accessible restrooms are available.
  • The surrounding Georgetown neighborhood is full of shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars.

How to get there

Georgetown University’s Main Campus is located in the Northwest quadrant of Washington DC. Paid parking is available on campus. Street parking is available but limited and restricted. A number of buses stop nearby, including the D2, D6, G2, 30N, 30S, 33, 38B, and the DC Circulator (Dupont-Georgetown-Rosslyn and Georgetown-Union Station routes). A free university shuttle also connects the university with the Dupont Circle and Rosslyn metro stations.

When to get there

Guided information sessions and campus tours are available Mondays through Saturdays between February and November, and Mondays through Fridays in December and January. Late spring and early fall are the most pleasant times to visit.

There are plenty of interesting attractions in the neighborhood, and it’s easy to spend the better part of a day here. After touring Georgetown University, spend some time by the water and head down to the Georgetown Waterfront Park or the C&O Canal. Fans of historic buildings will also have plenty to explore, including the Old Stone House, Dumbarton Oaks, and Tudor Place.
