If you’re after a freewheeling, cultural day out in DC, make the U Street Corridor your first stop. The dynamic neighborhood is home to a wide range of sights, including historical landmarks, such as the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum; destination-worthy restaurants, like Ben’s Chili Bowl and Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant; and world-class performance venues, such as the 9:30 Club and Howard Theatre. Things to know before you go

  • Keep your eyes peeled—the U Street Corridor is celebrated for its murals, including one featuring Barack and Michelle Obama on the side of Ben’s Chili Bowl.

  • It's only a short stroll to Malcolm X Park (also known as Meridian Hill Park), famed for its cascading fountain.

  • Head to Ben’s Chili Bowl to try one of DC’s most iconic dishes: the chili half-smoke, or a spicy hot dog–style sausage covered with mustard, onions, and chili sauce.

  • Held on Saturdays from May to November, the 14th & U Farmers Market is a great place to pick up produce and locally crafted foods.

How to get there

If using public transportation, take the Metrorail Green or Yellow lines to U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Station. The area is also served by a number of bus lines, including the #52, #54, #59, #90, #92, #96, and X3. It can also be reached by Capital Bikeshare or taxi.
