Visitors to Mansion House can explore parts of the interior, from the gilded State Room to the Georgian-era kitchen, which offers a glimpse into the life of the staff who worked here. Mansion House also hosts collections of artworks, glassware, swords, and an array of York-made gold and silver including a 17th-century silver chamber pot. Visitors can explore Mansion House independently or with the aid of an audio guide, which provides additional information. Some York attraction passes include free access to Mansion House.
Mansion House is situated on St. Helen’s Square in the center of York. It’s less than 10 minutes’ walk from York station, where trains from London, Manchester, and other UK cities arrive.
Mansion House is open Wednesday to Sunday all year round, as well as on bank holidays. Though St. Helen’s Square is often busy, the interior of Mansion House is typically crowd-free. Early afternoon is when most visitors arrive so come in the morning or late afternoon to experience Mansion House at its quietest.
Mansion House overlooks St. Helen’s Square, one of the buzziest spots in the historic center of York. The square is a popular meeting spot, with plenty of seating at its center, and several cafés and restaurants nearby. During summer, some of the surrounding businesses set up outdoor tables and people-watching opportunities abound. In December, a Christmas tree is erected at its center.
