Wie man 3 Tage auf Madeira verbringt

Organisiert von Jessica Colley ClarkeNew York–based writer and curious traveler.

The island of Madeira attracts travelers with its scenic hikes, powerful waterfalls, namesake fortified wine, and whale watching opportunities. Whether its hiking the volcanic landscapes or exploring tiny villages and historic museums, travelers can experience Madeira's rich history both outdoors and in. Here are a few ways to maximize your three days exploring all the island has to offer.

For an authentic accommodation experience, consider staying in a quinta (traditional manor house).

If you rent a car, make sure it has enough power to climb the very steep streets.

Day 1

Focus on the east coast of Madeira and get outdoors to see dramatic sea cliffs, traditional villages, and the island’s famous levadas (scenic mini-canals). You can choose between several tour options, including comprehensive full-day tours or half-day options. Some excursions are great for active travelers seeking outdoor adventure with guided hikes along the levadas. While other tours, such as Jeep safaris, are a better fit if you prefer to cover lots of ground and admire the views.

Consider tours that include a visit to a crafts village, a stop at a trout farm, or the chance to see several waterfalls in one itinerary. Traditional meals, souvenir stops, and photo opportunities at popular viewpoints are often included. Travelers seeking more hiking opportunities may want to check out tours of the UNESCO–listed Queimadas Forest Park.

Day 2

Discover the natural beauty of the west coast of Madeira with a day spent exploring fishing villages, visiting vineyards, and snapping photographs from some of the highest points on the island. Choose between a range of tour options including full-day excursions with hotel pickup that maximize your time on the west coast. Admire views from Cabo Girão, drive through the Laurisilva forest, and go swimming in the natural pools of Porto Moniz.

Some tours are focused on waterfalls and swimming, while others offer a more comprehensive look at the region including the charming town of São Vicente with a historic church. Private tours can be customized to individual preferences including fishing, hiking, photography, and culinary excursions.

Day 3

See Madeira from a new perspective by climbing aboard a boat. Join a whale- and dolphin-watching tour on the open seas in search of the local marine mammal population. Keep your eyes on the water to catch a glimpse of a variety of wildlife in its natural environment, and learn about how whales and dolphins communicate from the informative crew.

Alternatively, explore the south coast of the island with a Jeep safari that includes views of the Fajã dos Padres cliffs and a visit to the traditional village of Curral das Freiras located in a dramatic mountain setting. Travelers interested in local shopping may want to join a tour focused on the island’s lively flea markets in places like Santo da Serra.
