3 Days in Tulum for Foodies

Organisiert von Jenna Scatenawho's been visiting Tulum since before it was cool.

The dining scene in Tulum is about much more than the food. Tulum dining is a complete experience, with the location, ambiance, creativity, and decor coming together to elevate it as one of the top foodie destinations on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. With farm-to-table cafés attracting the wellness crowd, Instagram-worthy courtyards serving creative plates, and sprawling beach bars offering sunset cocktails and ceviche, there is a dining vibe suited to every mood and palate in Tulum.

The city's restaurant scene may seem overwhelming at first, but my foodie itinerary will help you navigate all the choices on the busy streets of the beachside town— from fresh fish tacos to colorful smoothie bowls. Here’s how you can eat your way around Tulum.

It's almost always sunny in Tulum, so don't forget your SPF.

If you have time for one thing, make it a Tulum taqueria.

Day 1

On day one, get acquainted with the charm of Tulum town with a stroll around the central area. You won't be short on breakfast options, but to narrow it down I recommend Matcha Mama and Ziggy's Beach Club. They're both close to the cerulean blue sea that surrounds Tulum, so you can enjoy breakfast with a view. Later, learn about local speciality cacao, taking part in a traditional ceremony with a local shaman before making your own honey soap and chocolate.

Cool down with a dip in the crystal clear cenote waters, after receiving your shaman's blessing. If you prefer to imbibe, take a taste test of local craft beers instead at the Cerveceria Tulum, with lunch included.

Day 2

On day two, go beyond the city limits on a tour of Izamal and Valladolid. The towns offer a peek at local architecture and heritage, and this tour includes stops at a chocolate museum, as well as a tequila tasting.

Alternatively, begin the day with a private, chef-led cooking class in Tulum. Visit local markets to source ingredients before learning to perfect guacamole or sikil pak, a pumpkin seed salsa. You'll get to sample delicious, authentic Mexican gastronomy.

Enjoy your food coma on the beach. Once recovered, try Maratea or Kokoro Tulum for a dinner to remember.

Day 3

Start with a floating breakfast at the Yellow Nest, set in the jungle outside Tulum. There, enjoy a guided meditation before your Instagram-worthy breakfast. Then rent bikes and explore the surrounding woods, or swim in the nearby sacred waters.

In the afternoon, take a walking food tour of Tulum. After all, your trip wouldn't be complete without tasting tamales. Sample some (plus other dishes) at five restaurants, with a park stroll in Parque Dos Aguas.

For something more homegrown, learn to cook Mexican food from scratch in a local home. You'll impress your friends with your tortilla-making skills.
