Der adrenalingeladene Ausflug zu den Walen hat Spaß gemacht. Der Führer war sehr informiert und nachdenklich. Das Mittagessen war großartig. Die Insel ist wunderschön, aber aufgrund des Wetters war die Klarheit des Wassers schlecht. Den ganzen Tag gut organisiert.

Nur eineinhalb Stunden Walbeobachtung

Nur anderthalb Stunden tatsächliche Wal-/Delfinbeobachtung (wir dachten, es sei ein ganzer Vormittag). Vieles schien sinnloses Warten zu sein. Treffpunkt um 8:30 Uhr, Abfahrt um 9:30 Uhr (1 Stunde war viel zu lang, selbst für die Erklärung und das Besorgen der Mäntel, aber in Ordnung. . ) Um 11:00 Uhr gab der Reiseleiter bekannt, dass wir zum Mittagessen weitergehen würden (mit kurzer Stopp außerhalb der Insel, um die Klippen zu sehen. Also eineinhalb Stunden auf der Suche nach Walen/Delfinen. Wir blieben zwei Stunden am Mittagsplatz (1 Stunde Essen, 1 Stunde Warten). Sie sagten zwar, dass das Boot zur Insel jede Stunde käme (für die Insel ist ein separates Boot erforderlich), aber die Wartezeit war (wieder einmal) viel zu lang. Wir hatten das Gefühl, dass wir das ganze Warten hätten nutzen können, um den ganzen Vormittag mit der Suche nach Walen zu verbringen. Es fühlte sich ehrlich gesagt zu kurz an. Positiv zu vermerken ist, dass wir einen Pottwal gesehen haben (obwohl er aus der Ferne scheinbar nicht in die Nähe der Boote wollte). Wir haben Rundkopfdelfine und viele Gemeine Delfine aus der Nähe gesehen. Die Reiseleiterin war großartig, sie gab viele interessante Informationen und war sehr professionell (ich glaube, ihr Name war Fatima und sie ist Meeresbiologin). Der Kapitän war auch großartig, sehr kompetent und freundlich. Ich sollte erwähnen, dass das Wetter an diesem Tag wirklich schlecht war. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob sich das auf unsere Walbeobachtungszeit ausgewirkt hat. Oder unsere Chancen, mehr Wale zu sehen. Insgesamt sind die 3 Sterne auf das lange Warten und die kurze Zeit der Walbeobachtung (dem Hauptaugenmerk des Tages) zurückzuführen. Im Übrigen war es gut. Sie können natürlich nicht garantieren, dass Sie Wale aus der Nähe sehen.

Diese Reise war so gut wie angekündigt. Beginnen Sie am Yachthafen, steigen Sie wahrscheinlich gegen 9 oder so ins Boot, vielleicht 915 . Ein paar Stunden lang fuhren wir mit dem Boot herum und suchten nach Meereslebewesen. Wir konnten einige Große Tümmler und eine Herde Pottwale sehen, wenn auch nicht für lange. Aber das ist die Natur dieser Aktivität – es ist der Ozean, also gibt es keine Garantien. Mit dem Ergebnis war ich jedenfalls relativ zufrieden. Wir hielten dann in Vila Franca do Campo an, um Boote zu transferieren, um zur Insel zu gelangen. Hier bekamen wir eine Tüte mit einem Sandwich, einer Flasche Wasser, einem Apfel und einer Saftbox. Sie können es auf der Insel essen, wenn Sie möchten. Die Insel selbst ist wunderschön und gibt Ihnen ausreichend Zeit zum Schwimmen, Schnorcheln und Sonnenbaden, auch bei unerwarteten Verzögerungen (siehe unten). Danach fuhren wir mit dem Boot zurück nach Vila Franco do Campo, wechselten die Boote und fuhren dann mit dem Boot zurück und kamen gegen 5 Uhr in Ponta Delgada an. Das Boot von und zur Insel fährt stündlich und passt nur eine bestimmte Menge hinein, und da wir bei beiden Fahrten nicht die ersten dort waren, mussten wir etwa 15 Minuten länger warten. Insgesamt keine schlechte Tour, alles in allem.

Unsere Reiseleiterin war fantastisch - freundlich, informativ und enthusiastisch und liebte die Tierwelt wirklich. Es schien jedoch, dass der Bootsfahrer etwas weniger erfahren war und die anderen Boote in der Nähe in der Lage waren, näher an die Wale heranzukommen. Außerdem ist die Beschreibung völlig ungenau. Ich habe diese Firma gegenüber der anderen Firma ausgewählt, die eine ähnliche Tour durchführt (bequemer direkt in Vila Franca do Campo gelegen), weil Bewertungen für den in Vila Franco ansässigen Betreiber sich darüber beschwerten, dass das Mittagessen in der Stadt sei, während dieser Betreiber angab, dass das Mittagessen "auf der winzigen Insel" sei von Vila Franca do Campo.“ Das war jedoch falsch, und das Mittagessen war in der Stadt und nicht auf der „kleinen Insel“. Daher mussten wir eine separate Bootsfahrt zu/von der Insel und dann eine weitere Bootsfahrt zurück nach Ponta machen Delgada. Dies fügte der Reise zusätzliche Etappen hinzu und verleitete uns dazu, den falschen Anbieter für unsere Bedürfnisse auszuwählen (ein Anbieter aus Vila Franca wäre viel bequemer gewesen). Außerdem steht in der Beschreibung "Toilette an Bord", was nicht stimmte.

Dear Heather, Good afternoon. Thank you for the time you took to share your experince with us. Please allow me to address the topic you pointed. Whale watching in the Azores follows a code of conduct and ethics, that, among other orientations, states that the distance to whales and dolphins should increase when there are several boats in an area (as pointed) or when we have a big group of whales. Therefore, the distance to the animals is always evaluated and adjusted in the moment of observation. We have been operating this tour for many years, and only recently, August 2022, we have changed the dynamic in terms of lunch, and no longer go to a local restaurant, as you went and now offer a lunchbox that we take to Vila Franca do Campo islet. This change was done due to the lack of response of local restaurant partners in the high season. The Vila Franca do Campo islet is a Natural reserve since 1983. There is only one boat allowed to make the connection between Vila Franca do Campo Marina and the islet. No tour operator in the Azores has a licence to drop guests at the islet during summer months. Restrooms on board are available indeed on our fiberglass boat, that unfortunately was not available during the week that you went out with us. I'm glad you have enjoyed your sightings and the company of our guide. I hope we can welcome you once again, for another adventure with us. Thank you.

Margaurite und Manuel waren einfach genial. Tolle Reise und Erzählung des Meereslebens, dem wir begegnet sind. Wir haben vor dem Mittagessen 3 verschiedene Walarten und viele Delfine gesehen, was großartig war. Das Inselschwimmen war wunderbar. Wir haben eine gute Zeit.

Ich hatte auf dieser Reise großes Glück mit perfektem Wetter, Delfinen und zwei Arten von Walen! Lara, die Meeresbiologin, war brillant mit ihren Erklärungen und hat einfach nach uns gesucht! Die Insel ist wunderschön mit vielen Fischen, die man beim Schnorcheln sehen kann :)

The guide was great, start was about an hour after we were told to meet up. Procedings were swift and the path quite clear communicated. Time til lunch was spent whale watching and after lunch the tour was moved to the snorkeling. 2 hours of that on the lovely volcano caldera and we got picked up for our return to PD.

This was an absolutely fabulous tour by Pico de Adventure. we departed in a Zodiac boat with 22 other people - felt safe the entire time. With our captain and tour guide we were able to spot 3 types of dolphins and sperm whales. After a nice lunch, we took the ferry to go snorkeling at the islet which was amazing! There were so many different types of fish to see. Would definitely recommend this.

Not worth it

The description provided is not correct. You are not riding a large boat with a bathroom and you are not having lunch at the Islet. You ride a small boat (which is be a rough and very wet ride). Lunch is a buffet at a banquet hall with other tours. Then you take the standard ferry to the Islet for less than an hour of snorkeling. Most of the full day tour was spent waiting for boats as it was poorly managed. My recommendation is to do a half day whale watching and separately take yourself to islet so you are able to spend as much time as you want at the islet. Plus the food at regular restaurants is far better than the buffet offered in this tour.

Therefore, we choose to have lunch in a restaurant, so that our guests can have more time to explore the islet. There is only one boat that is authorized to make the crossing to the islet, and therefore, we have to follow their schedules. Should have just done the snorkeling

Well, we traveled for a looong time and got bumped, slammed and jostled around ALOT , and did not see any whales! The tour was very un organized and timing was an issue- a lot of waiting around, and we only got a small amount of time to snorkel- my back was sore next day due to the slamming on the waves

Upon arrival, we noticed that the 'big' boat (from the pictures) was not available. Only Zodiac boats, but the company had a big Zodiac that seats more than 24 persons. It was an amazing tour, we saw two pairs of Sperm whale, two big groups of dolphins (two different species) and as the crown on the cake a big Sei whale. After this great adventure we went for a nice lunch in town. The snorkeling afternoon was also fantastic, what a beautiful underwater world. Almost all Caribbean colored fish but less in species. The way back was an adventure, due to the weather change, large waves made it an quit wet experience, but the crew did their utmost to keep everybody comfortable. Best day of our 3 island visiting holiday in 2023.

We had a wonderful tour, great tour guides, and it was a fantastic day! I would highly recommend this tour. We were in great hands all day and it was a lot of fun! We were lucky enough to see a sperm whale swimming along, and then he took a dive, so we got to see his tail. Loved that! Lunch was very good. We also loved swimming at Villa do Franco. That was insanely cool! I was a little disappointed to be on the boat that was not working well. It was running far too low to the water and causing us to take on huge amounts of waves. A boat was brought to us for us to switch into. At one point they were going to try to have a switch boats in the middle of the ocean which was not a good idea! I don’t think anyone in the boat felt comfortable about that. I was really glad when they decided the ocean was too rough and we went into a harbor to switch boats. Overall, we had a great day! Thank you for a great experience! I really enjoyed the ride waves & all!

Tour was amazing ! We were able to see a sperm whale in our journey. Inlet was also amazing. You have the opportunity to do some snorkeling and see many fish that is native to the Azores that you won’t see anywhere else. @exploration_wonders approved !

We saw no whales. As talking with locals , whales are usually seen in a different part of the island, where other tour groups takes you. We saw 3 types of dolphins, which was amazing. The lunch was pathetic, a baguette with 2 pieces of chicken and an apple. Picos de Aventure charged me 16 euros for a hotel pick up, which was only 8 min ride, what a rip off! It would have costed me 1 euro by bus. Our tour guide, a short local lady, was simply amazing!

This was a fun tour. We saw many dolphins and got a glimpse of a sperm whale. Vila Franca Islet is great for families since the water is not too deep, so small children can enjoy it. It may be challenging for older adults with mobility issues, since paths are narrow and uneven. There are no seating areas, other than to sit on the hard rocky surface. Overall, it’s a very fun place to explore with much marine life to see when snorkeling.

Definitely not worth the money

This trip is a rip off. The whale watching was great, for sure. The lunch was not in a restaurant as was said on the site, but a paper bag we received with a sandwich and some other items. We were then transfered to the islet to go snorkeling. The timeframe to do this was 3,5 hours. On the island there is basically nothing so after half an hour of snorkeling you are pretty much done. It felt like we were dumped there and we took an earlier boat back. The ‘guide’ was knowledgeable about the sealife we encountered so that was goed, but that was it. No welcoming word, no explanation about the day or the timetable or anything. Communication or hospitality not invented here. When we asked about the restaurant lunch, she told us that was yesterday’s trip… All in all definitely not worth paying 360 euros for 4 people.

Dear Suzanne Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It gives us the opportunity to address questions that might not meet our guests expectations. This year, we have been operating our tours to Vila Franca do Campo on the same base that we have created this experience. However, due to the current context, we started to have problems with our lunch suppliers (restaurants), and we decided to take immediate action in order o continue to offer this day trip to our guests. That is why we have chosen to change to a lunch box. The information was updated early August. The reason we have to take the 12h00 boat to Vila Franca, is because the boats departure hourly and we didn't want to leave people waiting that long in the harbour. There is only one boat that makes the connections between Vila Franca Marina and the Islet. The islet is a natural reserve, therefore, it´s aplace to enjoy Nature, swim and snorkel. I am sorry that your general feeling of the experience was not 100% according to your expectations. I hope we can welcome you again for another adventure with us. Thank you.

Manque d'organisation, prendre que l'excursion baleine + dauphins

On arrive au port sans savoir sur quel type de bateau on va embarquer. Cela a son importance car on ne s'habille pas pareil pour une journée sur un zodiac ou une journée sur un gros bateau avec cabine (au sec). Finalement on embarque sur un semi-rigide. On nous fait un briefing de la journée, on nous fait signer une décharge comme quoi ils ne sont pas responsables si on a un soucis de santé lors de l'excursion (ex: mal au dos a cause du zodiac)et on embarque. De part la violence des impacts lors de la navigation en semi rigide,cette activité ne convient pas à tout le monde (personne âgés, enfant, personnes ayant des maux de dos, de genoux ,ect...) Les avertissements sont un peu faible... Le point négatif est qu'on est trop nombreux sur le bateau 24 sur des sièges jockey sur un bateau de 8m environ, on est collé les uns aux autres, ce qui rend la navigation inconfortable. Il faut imaginer 2h30 de bateau a fond (environ 25/30nds) dans la houle avec les embruns, la pluie. J'ai pourtant l'habitude de faire du bateau mais c'est vrai que la recherche des baleines/dauphins c'était long (on a vu que des dauphins au début puis on a cherché pendant près de 2h des baleines sans résultat). On rentre le midi au port de Vila Franca pour déjeuner. On débarque du zodiac et on marche pendant 5min pour aller dans une sorte de salle de réception où on mange à table, service en buffet. La nourriture était correcte. Mais je trouve ça dommage qu'on ne déjeune pas sur l'île de Vila Franca avec des sandwichs ou tout autre collation en extérieur. A table, la personne qui s'occupe de nous, nous indique que si on mange vite on pourra prendre la navette pour l'île de Vila Franca a 13h sinon 14h. Évidemment on prendra la navette de 14h et encore, il faudra attendre une seconde navette car trop de monde pour aller sur l'îlot ( on arrive donc à 14h30 sur l'îlot) Heureusement en arrivant on lui demande a quelle heure on repart, elle ne nous avait rien dit. On passe donc 1h30 sur l'îlot pour du snorkeling. Au final ce qui ressort c'est un gros manque d'organisation et pas mal de temps perdu par ci par là et si on avait su on aurait juste pris l'excursion observation des dauphins et baleines, pour le déjeuner on se débrouille seul et on prend nous même la navette pour l'îlot (qui est une navette publique). Bref on ne recommande pas.
